Tiffany Coulson holds a Masters in Library and Information Science from the University of Washington. She is a member of Beta Phi Mu, the international honor society for library & information science. Tiffany has traveled to 13 countries and lived in 5 on 3 continents. For the past 25 years she has raised her family on an apple orchard in rural Washington State. The only librarian in her small rural town, she continues her scholarship as an information professional by volunteering as a local and international literacy advocate.
A published author, online-presenter and researcher, her interests include feminist theory, culturally responsive approaches to education and mental health in rural communities. She prioritizes work that highlights the strengths of diverse cultures, funds of knowledge, and solutions-based approaches to confronting barriers to equity in under-resourced communities at home and all over the world. Tiffany has presented at the Internet Governance Forum in Istanbul, The International Federation of Library Associations Knowledge Management Division in Wroclaw, Poland and for several American Library Association sponsored webinars. Her knowledge of intersectionalities in rural education have led to peer reviewing opportunities for the U.S. Department of Education, the American Society of Engineering Educators, and the American Educational Research Association.
As Associate Director of Programming for Altera, Tiffany combines her lived experience and interests to empower rural families living in poverty in their learning journeys. The creative after-school programs she designs affirm the value of heritage language use, collaborative learning, intergenerational family activity and multiple approaches to literacy that make students and their families partners with educators in teaching and learning.
Tiffany spends her recreational time reading mostly children’s literature. But if you ask her which are her favorite stories in the small straw bale library where she works, she will tell you they are the stories that walk in the front door.
